Bill Lawrence
Bill Lawrence arrives in Costa Rica on Columbus Day 1981. I discovered Costa Rica on Columbus Day. Really in 1981 Costa Rica was not in the books, not known by the Travel Agents, not in the city libraries. How in the world could you know about Costa Rica? To know about Costa Rica you had to have a friend, and I did. He actually had sailed a tall ship to Costa Rica, and by his description I knew I wanted to make Costa Rica my new home, a new opportunity. This is my story.
I learned right away that the Costa Ricans were a very friendly people and they have a very high pride factor and love of their country. Best of all they want to share their country with the gringo. Gringo to them is a term of endearment. This made it easy for me to assimilate and integrate into the culture. I have found that the best resource that Costa Rica has is its people. Sometimes with pride I refer to myself as "Lawrence of Costa Rica".
I had never been in a bed and breakfast so I started the first bed and breakfast in Costa Rica. Tourism was in its infancy and the government had to make a new category. Next someone told me about the internet. So in 1995 I was able to get started early and established the name www.costarica.org . With this advantage I have helped many people come to Costa Rica for vacations, retire, and be involved in their own business. Now I am involved in Tourism, Real Estate, the Personal computer club, the Kiwanas, and the International Baptist Church.
